What happened to the "read" part of this blog?

I realized that I've neglected the very first word in my blog title for the nearly two and a half years I've had this blog. I'm not sure why. I spend plenty of time reading - books, blogs, magazines, message boards, etc. I suppose I've fallen into this trap of thinking that what I read isn't of the caliber to be shared, or that no one wants to know what I thought of the books I've been reading.

However, I'm going to try to start synthesizing my thoughts on what I've been reading. I have tons of thoughts on everything I read, but I'm really out of practice as far as putting things into "sharing form." I feel like I might need to join a book club or something, but the only one I know of right now would require me to participate via Skype, and frankly, that just seems wrong. Book clubs aren't meant to be disconnected like that. They should be fun, personal, meetings in someone's living room over appetizers and herbal tea, right?

Beginning in September, I'll post a rundown of what I've been reading and/or a book/magazine review each Saturday. I'm not sure if this will spoil or not, but I feel like I have to say it in the interest of full disclosure: most of these posts will be of the pre-scheduled variety, as I'll probably spend some time working on them in the week(s) before I post them, and I'll probably be busy on Saturdays doing fun things like going to see the Braves play at Turner Field, picking my little sister up at the airport for a fun-filled week in the ATL, going to Alpharetta for Buca di Beppo, or flying around the country to see friends and family.

I'll kick it off this Friday with a list of blogs I'm delighted to read -- just in time for a long weekend that might bring you some free time for blog hopping!

Cousins: 2011 Edition

{Supplies: Studio Calico Lawn Party kit, Colorbox Ink. For exact details on the kit, please visit the website.}

I created this post for an Elle's Studio Thursday Sketch challenge back in July, and to my surprise, I won that week! I'm not sure how the winners are chosen, but I suspect it might be a random drawing. Regardless, I was proud of this layout because it came together quickly and simply for me, using the sketch from Elle's Studio and the kit from Studio Calico. I knew I wanted to use this photo of my sister, my four cousins, and myself. It was taken at my cousin Erin's high school graduation this past May. When I saw the sketch, I thought it would be perfect for me to use the number stamp along the side, with the girly patterned papers - a married lady without any daughters doesn't get a lot of chances to use butterflies and doilies! :)

I posted a layout a little over a year ago that featured the six of us with Grandma and Grandpa on their 50th wedding anniversary in 2007. It was fun to see how the six of us have changed in the past four years. There is another picture of the six of us from my 2009 wedding, so I think that one might merit a page of its own, too. I'm looking forward to my sister's wedding next year and another fabulous photo op with the cousins.

This was one of my first attempts at photographing one my layouts, and it's clear that I definitely need help with photographing my 12x12 layouts. Right now, I just lay them on the floor, zoom out as far as I can, get as high as I can, and snap the shot. I don't really get perfect photos that way. I think I might need to invest in a light box, or perhaps create a better "tableau" to photograph my pages within. I scan most of my smaller layouts when I intend to share them, and photographing cards isn't so hard because they stand up on their own. But these pages prove to be a bit problematic for me.

Here's what's been going on around here:

Week in the Life turned out to be a flop for me. Basically, as far as I got in posting the photo collages on my blog is as far as we got in the photo taking. We spent that Saturday at Valley Fair, which made carrying a camera (or even a phone) an impossibility. Sunday was spent at the Mall of America, and it was way too crowded to venture photos. Sad. So I might do something with my Monday through Friday collection, or I'll put the photos into other layouts.

School started for me on August 16. I will be working on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday each week for a teacher on maternity leave. She plans to be out 6-9 weeks. I'm going to love having a routine punctuated by craft days in between. It's a good way to get back into the classroom, that's for sure.

Travel is on a break until that maternity leave is over. We have some tentative plans to go to Chicago this fall and/or winter, we want to go see my family for awhile after I finish this leave, and there's quite a few friends spread around the country that we just haven't kept up with as we'd like to. And then there's a wedding coming up somewhere, sometime soon-ish. :)

I mailed 7 cards today that I will start sharing on the blog some time next week. One of them is a card you've already seen , but I think the rest are all originals. One is a duplicate of one of the other cards in the stack I mailed today. So, all together, that's five new cards I'll be sharing with you all.

10 Things on the 10th: Lunch Edition

My first day of school is next Tuesday, so I've been busy trying to get ready for everything again. My biggest concern is always what to bring for lunch. I prefer to eat healthy food that doesn't require much once I get to school because there's just no way to guarantee a fridge or microwave when you're a substitute. So, in honor of school starting, my very first "10 Things on the 10th" post is going to be about lunch options that need no fridge and no microwave. I often carry an ice pack along, and those meals that may need one are marked with an asterisk.

1. GoPicnic boxed lunches

2. Pasta salads made with vinaigrette dressings, pepperoni, fresh vegetables, and hard cheeses; bread, and a bit of fruit or sturdy cookies for dessert.*

3. Pretzels with peanut butter, dried apricots, a granola bar, and applesauce.

4. Chicken salad pita with carrots and dip, fruit, and a granola bar.*

5. Spinach salad with bacon pieces, vidalia onion, cherry tomatoes, feta, and a vinaigrette dressing with toasted pita wedges, Laughing Cow cheese wedge, and fruit.*

6. Pita wedges and hummus, trail mix, fruit, and a baggie of pre-popped popcorn.*

7. Veggie wraps, baked potato chips, fruit, and veggies with dip.*

8. Tuna salad with crackers, veggies and dip, fruit, and a minty cookie or candy*

9. Inside out margarita pizza (chopped tomatoes, chopped basil, mozzarella, minced garlic and sauce inside a pita) with fruit and yogurt. *

10. Sandwiches on toast, chips, veggies and dip, and some fruit.*

Just typing that makes me hungry! I think it's time for me to go find some lunch for the day.:)
